Praised by The Wire for music of “iridescent delicacy” and described as “superb,” Dr. Anqi Liu is a composer, sound artist, interdisciplinary artist, photographer, and filmmaker working across composition, free improvisation, electronics, modular synthesis, Mongolian choor khuur, audiovisual/interactive ecologies, and creative technologies. Her solo synthesizer work has drawn attention from Boomkat, while Veiled Erosion (KAIROS), an album of her acoustic compositions, received acclaim from de Volkskrant, Peter Margasak, Crescendo Magazine, and others. Liu presents work at IRCAM, Darmstadt, ICMC, ECCV Art Gallery, NIME, among others, and held residencies at EMS Stockholm and other institutions. Born and raised in Inner Mongolia, she originated the Ecology of Fraysonics, approaching sound as a fray-field where bodies, instruments, environments, histories, and conditions of hearing intersect, allowing instability, wear, and negotiation to shape meaning. She is Assistant Professor and Music Production Program Lead at RMCAD and holds a Ph.D. from UC San Diego.
