Manu Prakash is Associate Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University, Senior Fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, and Associate Professor of Oceans by courtesy. His interdisciplinary laboratory studies how computation is embodied in biological matter and invents tools for observing non-model organisms, particularly ocean life. He is known for frugal science instruments that make research more accessible, including Foldscope, as well as for building global citizen-science networks. Prakash is a 2016 MacArthur Fellow.
