Rully Shabara is an Indonesian vocalist and interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on the human voice as both medium and subject of investigation. For over two decades, his work has explored voice through three interrelated lenses—mind, spirit, and body—resulting in a wide range of projects spanning music, performance, language construction, speculative anthropology, and participatory systems. He is best known as one half of the experimental duo Senyawa, alongside numerous other projects including Khawagaka, Raung Jagat, Setabuhan, and XVM (Xhabarabot Voice Machines).
Shabara’s work challenges dominant narratives around authorship, tradition, and cultural ownership, often proposing decentralised, non-hierarchical models of creation and distribution. His projects have been presented internationally through performances, exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative platforms. Alongside his artistic practice, he mentors younger artists, organises DIY music initiatives, and continues long-term research into post-AI culture, digital interface for vocal improvisations, and alternative knowledge systems.
