Dreaming with AI: Shanghai is a site-specific generative artwork exploring how AI perceives a city it can describe but never physically experience. Developed through a dialogue with ChatGPT, the work draws on Shanghai’s architecture, environment, urban rhythms, histories, and sensory life. AI-generated images are continuously fragmented and reconstructed through a cellular automaton inspired by Conway’s Game of Life, accompanied by bilingual fragments of the AI’s narration. Situated within the city it attempts to describe, the work brings AI’s data-mediated vision into dialogue with viewers’ embodied knowledge, asking what is revealed, distorted, or lost when a place is reconstructed through data.
