Description:

The title IAMAT derives from Tiamat, a figure in ancient Mesopotamian mythology. She embodies the primordial sea that preceded the formation of the world, a state of chaos before the distinctions between heaven and earth, life and order had yet been established. Rather than retelling this myth, the work relocates Tiamat within a contemporary context. By extracting “IAMAT” from her name and invoking the latent phrase “I AM,” the primordial sea is transformed into a question of existence itself.

The work unfolds through two overlapping conceptions of the ocean. The first is internal: the darkness, pressure, and invisibility of the deep sea bring it close to the unconscious and to history, where forgotten memories, experiences, and traumas continue to exert their influence beneath the surface. The second belongs to material reality: submarine cables, sonar, positioning systems, and data transmission have turned today’s ocean into a vast yet largely invisible information network.

IAMAT emerges at the intersection of these two oceans. She is not a reproduction of a mythological figure, but a temporary human form assumed by this contemporary “primordial sea.” As life, memory, and information become increasingly difficult to separate from one another, the work asks whether the boundaries through which we define nature, technology, and life still remain valid.
