Thematically, composers each push the boundary of human-computer hybrid systems and are exemplary in one or more compositional sub-fields. They are pioneers of new techniques or have even spawned movements of their own. They connect to one or more of the following 10 categories:
1. Granular Synthesis
Digital techniques are used to augment natural sounds taken from reality through the extreme manipulation of time.
2. Electro-Acoustic Improvisation and Live Performance
Performance in human-computer hybrid systems. Digital augmentation of acoustic instrumental performance in a cybernetic feedback loop.
3. Remix Culture
Meaning augmented through associative transformation, the sonic version of how Graffiti can be considered an analog form of AR through its interaction with its environment.
4. Spatialization
Immersive artforms where sound is put into space both literally or through simulation. Augmentation of physical location through sound as sculpture.
5. Live Streaming Performance
Distributed audience mediated in bi-directional link, influencing one another in real time. Mediated performance space and augmentation of spectator-spectacle system through social media.
6. Modular Synthesis
Construction of emergent sonic spaces through networks of interconnected processes. Behavior unfolds through feedback, interaction, and controlled unpredictability. Augments traditional musical performance by transforming the instrument itself into a site of exploration.
7. Generative Systems
Emergence of complex behavior through system design. Evolution as a chaotic artform. Shares overlapping themes with #6.
8. Game Engines AND/OR Visual Music
Cross-modal artforms augment music through visual connection or vice versa. The Center for Visual Music (CVM) in LA is the most important organization in the world for this field and SIGGRAPH itself is a connection to graphics/games.
9. Glitch Art
Focus on abject sonic material, drawing attention to glitches and other sources of environmental noise, converting them into art through repetition and re-contextualization. Sonic appropriation.
10. Los Angeles
Artists physically working in LA or fundamentally connected to a notable scene in this geographic area.
