Description:

Museums often display only a small fraction of what they preserve. Behind the visible gallery lies a much larger cultural infrastructure: storage systems, conservation labs, archival records, digitization workflows, curatorial knowledge, metadata, object histories, and latent relationships across collections. See the Unseen begins from this “iceberg” condition of cultural heritage. It asks how visualization, immersive media, and AI-mediated imagery can amplify what is usually hidden from public view.

The work transforms Historic New England’s collection into a cinematic interface for cultural memory. Rather than presenting the archive as a static database or a sequence of isolated artifacts, See the Unseen moves between distant reading and close reading. At one scale, thousands of objects appear as patterns, clusters, timelines, typologies, and spatial fields. At another scale, individual objects return as surfaces, textures, traces of use, and intimate fragments of daily life. The experience invites audiences to perceive the archive not only as a repository of historical things, but also as a living system of relations among objects, people, labor, architecture, and imagination.

The work unfolds through six interconnected visual perspectives:

See the Unseen Spaces reveals the hidden architecture of preservation: storage rooms, collection facilities, conservation environments, digitization systems, and the institutional spaces that sustain cultural memory.

See the Unseen Collections visualizes the scale and diversity of Historic New England’s holdings, making visible the thousands of objects and archival materials that exceed the limits of conventional display.

See the Unseen Patterns uses collection-scale visualization to reveal temporal, geographic, material, and aesthetic relationships across objects.

See the Unseen Details magnifies surfaces, textures, inscriptions, and signs of use, restoring tactile and bodily presence to historical artifacts.

See the Unseen Latent Space introduces computational readings of the archive. AI-mediated imagery is used as a speculative layer that reflects visual affinities, atmospheric associations, and dream-like possibilities latent within the collection.

See the Unseen Futures imagines the museum collection not as a closed historical record, but as an evolving cultural interface through which future publics may encounter, reinterpret, and reanimate the past.
