Description:
The Last Insect is a speculative installation situated after an extinction event, presenting an archived insect within an abandoned preservation environment.
With preservation aesthetics, damaged scientific promise, apparatuses, and traces of decaying systems, the installation shows a life form performing existence. With this piece we explore biological memory, and the persistence of observation beyond human presence.
The work constructs an uncertain space where extinction, memory of what was and experience of what is left creates a cold “temperature” akin to preservation archival laboratories. Existence continues to circulate without clear authorship, destination, or observer.
Technical Information:
The project combines AI image generation, real-time interaction, and spatial projection systems. Insect visuals were created using ComfyUI and transformed into animated point-cloud entities. TouchDesigner was used to control behavioral loops, video transitions, sound response, and system logic. Arduino sensors detect human proximity and viewing distance, triggering changes between passive and active behavioral states. The installation uses a 45-degree holographic projection structure with acrylic and projection film to simulate a suspended archival specimen. The system operates as a responsive behavioral archive that continuously shifts between sensing, playback, and disappearance.
