Angie Abdilla

Angie Abdilla (palawa) is the founder and director of Old Ways, New and a Professor at the School of Cybernetics, ANU. In these roles, her modalities span strategic design, research, and creative practice, focusing on technology as cultural practice. For over a decade, Angie has advocated for and demonstrated how Indigenous Knowledge systems can shape the conceptual and technical requirements of automation and Artificial Intelligence. She co-founded the Indigenous Protocols and AI working group (2017) and created Country Centered Design (2018) – a design methodology to support the cultural affordances and requirements that shape technology projects. As a researcher and exhibiting artist, her published works extend into film and video formats, with her latest work launching at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in 2025. Angie has and continues to advise on the safety of AI for entities such as the World Economic Forum, the United Nations, Federal governments both here and internationally, and serves numerous boards regarding AI and culture-specific matters.
