Susan Detroy is a 50-year visual storyteller with ten series, in historic and digital photography, transfer prints, paintings and video. Living in Indiana in the US, Susan fell in love with visual arts in childhood, through Look and Life magazines, with weekly excursions to a neighborhood movie theater. Early in her career, Ms. Detroy formed Medium Rare, a media collective, teaching herself darkroom skills. She expanded her competency at the University of Oregon and Lane Community College. Running a photography business, Ms. Detroy managed galleries, curated shows and consulted for artists, while learning to use digital cameras.
Susan has worked and made art in photography, printmaking and drawing, exhibiting in local group shows. Her work in the past was about the natural world, combining photography and botanical study in a series of one of kind prints focused on cactus and dragonflies. The work melds alternative photo processes, ink, pen, pencil and watercolor in a layered process. Currently Susan works in digital media, producing moving visual stories, using iPhone and iPad. Her films are meditative, exploratory and informative exploring themes of earth and self love.
