Description:

Rooted in Tao Yuanming’s The Peach Blossom Spring and using drifting peach blossoms as a sustained visual motif, this immersive digital work redefines Eastern reclusive culture by shifting the ancient pursuit of physical mountain seclusion to an inward spiritual reclusion fit for urban residents, realizing a modern reimagining of cultural heritage. Opening with a cramped passage metaphorizing the mental strain of dense city living and echoing the classical line “At first the passage was extremely narrow, barely wide enough for one person to pass”, its numerous fractured, parallel utopian scenes dismantle the outdated fantasy that escape from worldly life grants everlasting peace, illustrating that the ancient rural haven is unattainable in today’s urbanized world with no one-size-fits-all ideal life. After all fragmented landscapes dissolve, vast soft monochromatic light fields fill the screen to deliver the dual visual and mental revelation of “suddenly an open vista unfolds”; these minimalist, calm luminous spaces counteract the fast, overstimulating visuals of modern media, granting fleeting meditative respite to passersby on urban digital canvases and affirming people’s capacity to maintain private inner worlds amid rigid modern surroundings. Concluding with a towering peach tree that marks the ultimate spiritual destination after wandering through confusion and illusions, the piece conveys that genuine serenity cannot be found in faraway landscapes but must be cultivated deep within the self, as modern citizens lack the option to physically abandon the metropolis.
