Grafted Currents
Description:
Grafted Currents takes inspiration from the Fahua Peony Grafting Technique, a Shanghai intangible cultural heritage tradition rooted in Changning. Historically, Fahua peonies were able to adapt to the Jiangnan environment through grafting. The work uses this process as a way to think about cultural continuity: tradition remains alive by adapting, transforming, and taking on new forms.
Using the river system along Changning’s northern boundary as a spatial structure, peony forms gather across the contemporary urban landscape and gradually shift into expanding visual echoes. By translating the idea of adaptation from horticultural practice into digital media, the project explores how local cultural heritage can continue to evolve within new spaces, technologies, and contemporary contexts.
