Description:

The Long Fall is an immersive audiovisual journey into plankton’s role in Earth’s climate. Beginning at the White Cliffs of Dover, audiences descend through the ocean, following marine snow into the microscopic world of plankton, then rise toward a planetary vision: Earth becoming a coccolithophore, whose ancient remains formed the cliffs. Rachel Carson’s voice interweaves with the soundscape. Drawing on seven years and eighteen ocean expeditions using PlanktonScope and Gravity Machine, developed by Stanford’s Prakash Lab, the work inhabits the perspective of drifting plankton, revealing how these organisms produce oxygen and carry atmospheric carbon into the depths of the ocean.
